This work is a painted image of the "Sleeping Hermaphroditus" by Bernini and functions as a self-portrait. The work invokes the tragedy and suffering of the rape/transformation of Hermaphroditus at the hands of the nymph Salmacis and the gods in Ovid's "Metamorphoses". By layering thin glazes of acrylic paint, the image represents the complex and sublime beauty of this nonconsensual and fated merging of masculine and feminine.
