Kristin Myers

Kristin Myers calls Savannah, GA her home, where she wears multiple hats as a Foundations Professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) by day, an artist who thrives in the night, and a weekend beach-loving surfer. She earned her BFA in Painting and Drawing from SCAD in 2006 and followed it with an MFA in Studio Art from the Moore College of Art and Design in 2013. Her artwork has graced exhibitions nationally in Savannah, Philadelphia, Florida, New Jersey, as well as internationally in Ireland and France. Notably, she was recently commissioned to create an impressive 11’x29’ mural featuring one of her crashing waves for a new residential space in Savannah, GA in 2021.

Before settling in Savannah almost six years ago, Kristin played a vital role as the gallery manager at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in New Jersey from 2008 to 2011. There, she co-curated over thirty exhibitions and curated the LBIF's most successful exhibition to date, "Where Oceans Converge." Alongside her gallery and museum work, Kristin shared her passion for painting and drawing as a teacher at Rowan College at Burlington County, NJ, and Ocean County College, NJ.

After her relocation from the Jersey Shore to Savannah, Kristin joined SCAD as an art preparator. For three years, she was part of a dedicated team that installed around thirty exhibitions annually across SCAD's campuses in Savannah and Atlanta. In June 2021, Kristin seized an amazing opportunity to travel to Lacoste, France, where SCAD has a satellite campus, to install a tribute exhibition honoring the late Pierre Cardin. Amidst the long days of gallery installations, she found solace in wine-filled evenings overlooking the lavender-filled hills of Provence, sketching new ideas to bring back to Savannah.

While Kristin's love for the ocean continues to inspire her artwork and draws her to the beach whenever possible, she is fully immersed in her role as a full-time Foundations professor at SCAD, imparting her wisdom in Drawing and Design to incoming students. During her school breaks she travels anywhere and everywhere to always be inspired. Last year she traveled the markets and desserts of Morocco and the rocky coastlines of Acadia National Park in Maine. This year, it will be Machu Picchu in Peru and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Statement

Reflecting on the past ten years of my life, I can easily discern the challenging times: the end of a decade-long relationship, coming out in my mid-thirties, facing rejection from the community I had always known, relocating far from home, transitioning into a new career, and then pivoting again three years later. The need to control something, anything, during those uncertain times has become a coping mechanism for me.

My artistic journey has mirrored these experiences, evolving from portraying the terrifying beauty of hurricanes to meticulously rendering coastal surface textures. I now focus on the sea's surface, piles of shells washed ashore, and the weathered textures of driftwood. Through multiple layers of abstraction and a concentration on mark-making, I aim to invite viewers to perceive the tangible through the lens of the intangible. The tiny marks and intricate details in my line work capture moments when I felt secure and in control.
