Nat Lacuna

Nat Lacuna is a mid-twenties queer artist that has been specializing in their particular style of drawing for over a decade. They originally hail from Florida, and found their love of art there. Through observations of dense foliage, brutal heat, and vibrant communities within that place, they were able to combine elements of all those things into their art with bright colors, organic linework, and deeply empathetic motivation. With a hyper-focus on the illusion of boundaries, the intentional existence outside borders, and hypnotic states of creation, she creates immersive drawings that are incredibly engrossing and unbelievably individual.

Throughout their life, they have found themself most motivated through music as it is the most potent connection for escapism and engagement. Music is where they found queerness, community, and pride in themself - crediting different artists being responsible for her still being alive. They have played in multiple bands and worked in different parts of the industry, including everything from touring photographer to review writer for magazines to merchandise management. Its current focus is mainly on their band, The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir - a chaotic screamo band from the area, however she finds time to do graphic design and visual art fairly regularly around that and their full-time job at a music store.

On top of that, she finds herself averaging 40 hours of intentional music listening per week, with an average of seven new albums in that rotation. Within her art, there has been an exploration of that obsession with music. Most of their compositions have taken multiple hours and have been spent entirely listening to the same song or album for the entire duration. Their longest thus far has been their 18x24" piece 'Singularity', inspired by the Jon Hopkins album of the same name, which took just shy of 22 hours to complete. While not all of her pieces go that big, they do spend quite a bit of time on all of them.

She has grown from trauma related to self harm and suicidal ideation, disordered eating, physical and emotional abuse, homelessness, and sexual assault. Through exploring music about these things, and spending deeply reverent time with them, they have attached a very special tether to the soundtrack of their endurance. It is through that and the support of their community that they have made it this far and been able to create to such lengths.

Statement

My name is Nat Lacuna. I am a queer individual living in Savannah, GA. While I also do photography, graphic design, and front a very active metal band in the city, I also love creating ink drawings. My ink drawings are obsessive pieces that explore minuscule detail, communities on a microcosmic scale, repetitive behaviors, and identification with media.

As someone who has grown from trauma both related to my queerness and other parts of myself, I have found lots of pieces of myself in media I have consumed, especially through music. Throughout my drawings, I will choose a specific album or a specific song and listen to it on repeat for the entire duration of the creation of the piece. I will let my brain focus only on creating the small lines in front of me.

I hope people are able to identify with the level of escapism and immersion I am pursuing in my pieces, and hope they are as endlessly rewarding to look at (try different angles and orientations, too!) to you as they are to make for me.
